Flounder, Flounder, Flounder

Steve Labanec (Owner of Seagull Bait and Tackle) caught this six pound Flounder on August 2nd, 2005 in Carolina Beach.Big Flounder were biting this past week. We have weighed in several big flatty’s all the way up to Debbie Harrill’s nine pound two ounce Flounder. We saw one real nice stringer that three men brought in caught on a boat with nine six pound Flounder and a tenth one that weighed four and a half pounds. Offshore, Spanish Mackerel are still all over the inshore waters feeding on Clark Spoons and mixed in with the Spanish Mackerel are some large King Mackerel. The surf is producing lots of Croaker, Whiting and some nice size Pompano. The surf is even giving up some decent size Flounder. Someone reminded me about an article I wrote a while ago about surf fishing and the misconception of having to cast out past the bars, well, let me refresh everyone’s memory. Fish like structures because that?s where the bait is. This includes the surf. Sand Fleas and small baitfish live at your feet in the wash of the waves. That’s where the smaller fish feed. The bigger fish come over and through the sand bar to feed on the smaller fish. So stop casting so far and fish inside the outer bar or look for a break in the bar which is another good spot to fish.
