Fishing is Really Heating Up from Wrightsville to Carolina Beach

Hi Folks,

Weather wise and to some extent fishing wise it has been a tumultuous two weeks. But in the end the fishing has become fantastic.

Now here is my report:

Inshore: Waters temps have risen rapidly into the higher seventies, causing a momentary down cycle in the fishing. Lots of live bait is around, mainly in the form of menhaden. Look for the red bite to improve very quickly. The flounder bite is full on and the fish are getting bigger.

Near Shore: This is where it is happening now! Bluefish, Spanish macks, cobia, small AJ’s on the AR’s; all are going on right now. Blues and Spanish are biting trolling clarkspoons and bird rigs. Cobia are feeding on the large schools of menhaden and you can site cast to them. Small amberjack have invaded the inshore AR’s and are providing lots of fun.

Offshore: The king bite is still a good ways out but they may change overnight as the water temps climb. Bottom fishing for grouper action is best in the 30-40 mile range.

Gulfstream: Good numbers of wahoo, tuna and mahi along with some billfish have been reported.

Upcoming: June is my #2 favorite month of the year. Almost everything is biting and providing plenty of action. Look for the kings to move in closer and mahi from 10-15 miles. Big flounder inshore and on the near shore AR’s. Get ready, it’s going to happen. Be sure to check out the pics in the Photo Gallery.

Until next time…
