Bald Head Island Fishing Rodeo

Contributed By Janet Hoffer, Staff Writer for The Island Gazette: Carolina Beach charter boat the Music Man, captained by David Marshall took home the grand prize at the 14th Annual Bald Head Island Fishing Rodeo. The 40-foot sport fishing boat, manned by a crew of six individuals, captured this prize for the second year in a row. This year they won with 338 pounds of tuna and dolphin and won second place in the billfish category with the release of a blue marlin. Last year, Music Man brought in 217.31 pounds of fish for the grand prize and was led by Captain Fred Holland. The fishing rodeo, hosted by Bald Head Island Limited took place June 2-4, 2005 and is one of the most competitive fishing events in the region. The weekend event included 2 days of fishing with a weigh-in at the end of each day, with dinner and an awards ceremony at the end of the competition. The prizes were based on total quantity of fish caught with multiple categories including Lady Angler, Junior Angler and the largest tuna, wahoo and dolphin catch daily. Some categories received trophies, others cash prizes. Carolina Beach resident Ducky Garner was presented with the Judy S. Agner Appreciation Award by the 14th Annual Bald Head Island Fishing Rodeo committee. The award was given to Ducky for the committee?s “sincere gratitude for service and commitment to the Bald Head Island Fishing Rodeo. It is through the dedication of individuals such as the recipient of this award that the rodeo will continue to grow and succeed.”
