Kure Beach Pier

It’s getting better. Some small whiting have showed up on the end of Kure Beach Pier. There is some puppy drum down on the flats behind Masonboro Island and also behind the Air Force Base in Kure Beach. Things are warming up and fishing is once again on the rebound. Soon there will be whiting down at the mouth of the Cape Fear River and that will signal the start of a new season. Generally, whiting hit the river anywhere from the middle of March and as late as the start of April. So if you have a couple of hours or just want to check out the boat, it?s a perfect way to start the season. Offshore, bottom fishing is still very good. Especially for black sea bass and Beeliners. Some of the black sea bass are really big. Several four pounders have been caught out around the twenty-five mile mark. In the surf, there are plenty of sharks and some puppy drum. They are feeding on cut bait and shrimp. You could also try fishing the docks and oyster beds for puppy drum and speckled trout. Grubs and shrimp will work the best as bait. Keep fishin and releasin!
