Description: This nice speckled trout and flounder was caught by Dillon while fishing in the Cape Fear River. A few whiting, small black bass, and croakers are starting to bite on the bottom around Southport using shrimp. In the backwaters still catching some red drum and a few speckled trout. Up the river still catching a few striped bass and red drum. It’s that time of year to get out your fishing equipment and make sure everything is in good working order. Spring is just around the corner. Keep fishing and stay safe.

Description: Malcolm Thaden with a nice black drum caught fishing the lower Cape Fear. The next few months we should see a handful of black drum but the numbers will be relatively low. The closer we get towards spring, we should see a push of fish into our backwaters. January and February are most often our slower months for these fish but that doesn't mean we wont catch them on occasion. We will target them with dead shrimp on a Carolina rig or a jig head also in similar locations as the reds and speckled trout.
